ISLAMABAD (Turkiye Khabar) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said that any attempt by India to use water as a tool of pressure could pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability, warning that such actions may lead to grave consequences.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Ishaq Dar stated that the unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty is contrary to the spirit of international agreements and established legal principles. He emphasized that under international law, India is obligated to implement the treaty and fulfill its international commitments.
He said that the Indus Waters Treaty contains a clear and peaceful mechanism for resolving disputes within its framework. However, India has adopted what he described as an illegal and irresponsible approach regarding the matter. Despite this, Pakistan remains committed to its position in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that any attempt to deprive the people of Pakistan of their legitimate water rights is unacceptable. He warned that the use of water as a political or strategic weapon could have consequences not only for bilateral relations but also for the entire region.
Ishaq Dar further stated that Pakistan will continue to effectively pursue and defend its water rights through all legal, diplomatic, and international forums.
