Turkey Strongly Condemns Lefkoşa Attack, Calls It a Threat to Peace

Istanbul (Turkiye News): In Istanbul, Burhanettin Duran strongly condemned the attack on civilians in the buffer zone of Lefkoşa, stating that such an act is against regional peace and human values.

According to the statement, elements affiliated with EOKA carried out an हमला using stones and improvised explosive devices on civilians in the Yiğitler Bridge area within the Lefkoşa buffer zone.

Turkish officials stated that the incident occurred when groups gathered in southern Lefkoşa on April 1, marking the anniversary of the organization, targeted civilians present in the northern Cyprus area. During the attack, stones, sticks, and explosive materials were used, while some attackers, reportedly masked, fled after the incident.

Burhanettin Duran said that targeting civilians in such a provocative manner is also a violation of international law. He stressed that those responsible must be brought to justice and effective measures should be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

He added that Turkey is closely monitoring the situation and, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, will continue to support the peace and rights of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Following the incident, Tufan Erhürman also condemned the attack, and diplomatic contacts have been initiated with the United Nations and other relevant parties.

It is worth noting that the EOKA organization was established in the 1950s by Georgios Grivas with the aim of ending British rule in Cyprus and uniting the island with Greece, though it later also targeted opponents.
