Türkiye Criticizes Greece Over Allegations of Distorting Historical Narratives

Ankara (Turkiye Khabar) Turkey has strongly criticized Greece, accusing it of distorting historical facts through official statements and actions that Ankara says are harming bilateral relations.

In a statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ankara said that May 19, 1919 — the day Mustafa Kemal Atatürk arrived in Samsun marking the start of the War of Independence — is commemorated in Türkiye as Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.

The statement accused Greece of promoting a negative narrative about Türkiye, citing its 1994 parliamentary decision referencing so-called “Pontus claims,” which Ankara says has also been reflected in parts of the Greek education system.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Greece is attempting to revive historical events to reshape narratives around past conflicts in Anatolia.

The statement also referenced historical documents, Allied commission reports, and the Treaty of Treaty of Lausanne, saying these sources are part of the recorded historical framework of that era.

Türkiye urged Greece to avoid using history for political purposes and instead focus on promoting peace and cooperation in the region.
