New York (Monitoring Desk) A strong diplomatic confrontation between the United States and Iran was witnessed at the opening of the United Nations review conference on nuclear non-proliferation.
During the session, both countries exchanged harsh objections over Iran’s nuclear program and procedural matters of the conference. A major point of contention was Iran’s inclusion among the 34 vice presidents of the conference, a nomination made by the Non-Aligned Movement.
The United States expressed surprise over the decision, stating that a country which does not show seriousness toward agreements should not be given such a key role in the meeting. The US was supported by Australia and the United Arab Emirates, while the United Kingdom, France, and Germany also raised concerns over the nomination.
On the other hand, Russia rejected the opposition to Iran and extended its support. Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in Vienna dismissed US allegations as baseless and politically motivated, strongly rejecting them.
Experts say these differences may intensify further during the four-week-long conference.
