New Ebola Outbreak Confirmed in DR Congo, 65 Deaths Reported

Kinshasa (Monitoring Desk): Africa’s public health agency has confirmed a new outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to media reports, at least 65 deaths have been reported in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while 246 suspected cases have also been recorded.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said health authorities are investigating whether the outbreak involves the Ebola Zaire strain, which is considered the most dangerous variant of the virus.

Neighbouring Uganda has also confirmed one Ebola-related death.

The outbreak is reportedly spreading mainly in the Mongala and Rwampara health zones in eastern Congo, near the borders with Uganda and South Sudan. Officials have expressed concern that the virus could spread across borders due to the region’s proximity to neighbouring countries.
