“Khalkhalchi Day” Being Celebrated in Azerbaijan, Tribute to Carpet Weaving as National Heritage

Baku (Turkiye Khabar) In Azerbaijan, the traditional and ancient art of carpet weaving is being celebrated every year on May 5 as “Khalkhalchi Day,” symbolizing that this craft is an important part of the country’s cultural identity.

Azerbaijan’s centuries-old tradition of carpet weaving reflects not only artistic skill but also the nation’s intellectual and aesthetic values. This day is specifically observed in memory of the establishment of Azerkhalcha, which played a key role in the development of this industry.

According to reports, the day is observed close to the birthday of national leader Heydar Aliyev, who is regarded in the country as a protector of cultural heritage.

President Ilham Aliyev has also given special attention to the promotion of carpet weaving. Under his directives, several Azerkhalcha centers have been established and workshops have been set up across the country to preserve and promote this traditional art.

On this occasion, 18 carpet weavers were recently awarded the “Progress” medal in recognition of their services, which reflects clear state support for the sector.

Azerbaijan’s First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva is also playing an important role in promoting this art. Due to her efforts, Azerbaijani carpet weaving has been included in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage, giving the craft global recognition.
