Iran rejects US-backed resolution, Russia takes firm stance at UN Security Council

New York (Monitoring Desk) The Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations has strongly rejected a proposed US resolution against Iran, warning that unilateral actions could further escalate tensions in the region.

During a UN Security Council meeting on maritime security in the Gulf, Russian envoy Vasily Nebenzya said that Moscow will not support any resolution that only blames Iran while ignoring the root causes of the ongoing crisis in the region.

He stated that Russia rejects all attempts to impose a one-sided narrative against Iran and emphasized that without addressing the fundamental causes of the conflict, a solution is not possible.

The Russian envoy warned that adopting biased resolutions could trigger a new wave of instability and tensions in the Middle East. According to him, lasting maritime security in the Gulf cannot be achieved through provocative statements or unilateral condemnation, but requires an end to military actions and a political settlement of disputes.

Russia urged member states of the Security Council to avoid steps that could further escalate confrontation in the region.

It is worth noting that the United States had submitted the resolution with the support of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar, calling on Iran to stop alleged attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and abolish imposed tolls.
