Indus Waters Treaty: Pakistan Welcomes International Court Decision

Islamabad (Turkiye Khabar): Pakistan has welcomed the decision of the international court of arbitration regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, describing it as a confirmation of Pakistan’s stance.

According to the Government of Pakistan, the ruling has made it clear that India is obligated to provide Pakistan with all necessary information for reviewing the implementation of the treaty.

The government stated that the Indus Waters Treaty places clear and genuine limits on India’s ability to use and control water from the western rivers. It added that these restrictions are not merely procedural but apply from the very stage of project planning and design.

The statement further said that India cannot justify additional water storage through hypothetical generation capacity or artificial load curves.

In its ruling, the international arbitration court stated that India does not have unrestricted authority to store water in hydroelectric projects on the western rivers according to its own discretion.

The court also directed India to share all technical and hydrological information related to the Kishanganga and Ratle hydropower projects with Pakistan to ensure compliance with the treaty requirements.
