Baku (Turkiye News Desk): Georgian political analyst Gia Abashidze has said that the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway is not just a rail line but part of Azerbaijan’s broader strategy to emerge as a major transit hub between China, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Europe.
He stated that the economic benefits of the project are not limited to direct revenues, but also include wider impacts such as the development of logistics centers and an overall increase in regional economic importance. According to him, property and value along the railway corridor are also increasing significantly.
The analyst said that investments made years ago are now yielding practical results. He added that Azerbaijan’s energy and infrastructure policies, large reserves, and financial stability have turned the country into a strong regional energy hub.
He further noted that Azerbaijan is not only benefiting from transit fees but is also strengthening its position as an alternative route to Russia and the Suez Canal, thereby increasing its diplomatic and economic significance.
According to Gia Abashidze, the railway is moving beyond an experimental project and is becoming a major Eurasian logistics corridor capable of competing in global container transport.
He explained that when freight volume on a railway reaches around 5 million tons, it begins to establish a stable commercial flow, which further boosts industrial and business activity around it.
He added that the growing trend of container transport indicates that the route will play an important role in shipping electronics, auto parts, industrial goods, and e-commerce products, making it part of the global supply chain rather than just a transit route.
He concluded that the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway is becoming a strong and sustainable pillar of the Middle Corridor linking Asia and Europe.
