Azerbaijan and Japan deepen cooperation ahead of 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties

Baku (Turkiye News): Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that the recent visit of Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov to Japan marks an important development in bilateral relations.

It was noted that this was the first visit by an Azerbaijani foreign minister to Japan in the past 17 years. During the visit, he held meetings with Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and members of the parliamentary friendship group.

He also addressed a roundtable discussion at the Japan Institute of International Affairs.

At the conclusion of the visit, a joint statement was issued by the foreign ministries of both countries.

According to the report, statements by the Japanese foreign minister regarding Azerbaijan’s strategic importance, energy security, and role in regional stability received wide coverage in Japanese media.

Next year marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and both sides have agreed to further strengthen their partnership on this occasion.

The Japanese foreign minister also thanked Azerbaijan for its cooperation in the evacuation of Japanese citizens amid the current situation in Iran.

The discussions also focused on expanding cooperation in energy security, economic relations, climate change, decarbonization, the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, and investment.

The Japanese foreign minister described Azerbaijan as an important energy partner and a key player in regional stability.

The report further noted that due to uncertainty in global energy markets, Japan is diversifying its energy policy. In this context, an oil tanker carrying Azerbaijani crude oil arrived at Yokohama port in May, which was described as a significant development.
