Istanbul (Turkiye News): Turkey’s deep-sea drilling vessel has arrived in Somalia, marking the beginning of a historic mission and the country’s first offshore deep-sea drilling operation abroad.
Turkish Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said in a statement on social media platform “X” that the vessel “Cagri Bey” has reached Somalia for its landmark mission.
He stated that this initiative will open a new chapter in the energy history of both Türkiye and Somalia. Bayraktar added that Türkiye is launching its first international deep-sea drilling campaign and expressed hope for its success.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources Turkey, the vessel will conduct drilling at the Korad-1 well near the Somali coast, reaching a depth of approximately 7,500 meters (over 24,600 feet) over a period of 288 days.
The ministry described the mission as Türkiye’s first-ever overseas deep-sea exploration and drilling activity. Bayraktar had earlier stated that the vessel would arrive in Somalia on Friday, marking the start of Türkiye’s first offshore drilling operation in the waters of the Horn of Africa.
