Turkish-American Community Protest in New York, Dispute Over Historical Statements Intensifies

Ankara (Turkey News): Members of the Turkish-American community staged a protest in New York over remarks made by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani regarding the 1915 Ottoman-era events and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

According to reports, the demonstration took place in Times Square, where various Turkish organizations participated. Protesters expressed their stance through placards and slogans.

During the protest, brief tensions were also reported between some Armenian and Turkish groups; however, the situation later returned to normal.

Organizers said the purpose of the demonstration was to register objections to the mayor’s statements, which included references to the 1915 events and recent developments in Karabakh.

They stated that such remarks risk further complicating already sensitive historical issues and could create misunderstandings between different communities.

Türkiye maintains that describing the 1915 events solely as genocide is not accurate, arguing that there were casualties on both sides during that period. Ankara has previously suggested the formation of a joint commission of Turkish and Armenian historians to examine the facts of the issue.
