Turkey to Mediate to Reduce Tensions with Iran: Erdoğan

Istanbul (Turkey News): Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Istanbul to discuss bilateral relations and the current situation in the region. According to the Presidential Communications Directorate, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan was also present, though further details of the talks were not disclosed.

Earlier, Minister Fidan held a separate meeting with his Iranian counterpart, after which a joint press conference emphasized that the U.S. should reject any Israeli pressure for potential military action against Iran. Fidan reiterated that Ankara opposes military intervention in Iran and supports resolving Iranian issues peacefully, internally, and with the consent of its people.

The Iranian Foreign Minister’s visit comes as Turkey accelerates diplomatic mediation efforts between Tehran and Washington, aiming to reduce tensions and pave the way for a political solution. This development coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump showing relative restraint in statements regarding immediate military action against Iran.

The visit also follows heightened tensions due to late-December protests in Iran over economic issues and subsequent crackdowns. President Trump noted on Friday that Iran is interested in a potential agreement with Washington, referencing U.S. naval movements in the region.
