Ankara (Monitoring Desk): Presidential spokesperson Burhanuddin Duran delivered a speech at the opening of the panel “Turkey–Somalia Relations Amid Global Change,” organized by the Presidential Communications Directorate.
He began by congratulating both countries on 60 years of diplomatic relations, noting that these ties, founded on deep brotherhood, will continue to grow stronger in the future. Spokesperson Duran said that bilateral relations have taken on a multidimensional and profound character, especially following the launch of the “Africa Initiative” in 2005 under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Recalling President Erdoğan’s 2011 visit to Somalia, Duran stated that the trip resonated globally and addressed a long-standing international neglect, paving the way for comprehensive solidarity and cooperative measures. He added that while Turkey had historically given limited attention to Africa, foreign policy under President Erdoğan transformed this approach, prioritizing the continent as a key area of strategic partnership.
He emphasized: “We support the economic development and capacity-building needs of African countries, strengthen their security and stability, and promote bilateral cooperation in the defense sector. As a potential third aspect, we act as a facilitator or mediator in resolving conflicts arising in Africa. Additionally, we cooperate with regional institutions on the continent and seek alignment with African countries on global issues, as Africa is one of the key centers shaping the global order.”
Spokesperson Duran highlighted that under President Erdoğan’s strong leadership, Turkey has enhanced its prestige in Africa and established relations with African partners based on equality and mutual understanding. “We maintain our relations on the principles of mutual benefit and equality,” he said.
He also pointed out that Turkey’s presence in Africa causes concern for some nations, which view the continent solely as a playground for major powers. “Some countries try to downplay Africa’s true geography and resources, spreading stories of crisis and chaos in the media, whereas the continent is rich in ancient civilizations, natural beauty, and cultural diversity. With its young and dynamic population, resource wealth, and steps toward regional integration, Africa is emerging as a new focus in the global economy. This is why we base our relations on equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit. This is the biggest distinction that sets us apart from other countries and brings Africa closer to us.”
