Turkey Announces Support for Process to Make Syria Free of Chemical Weapons

Ankara (Turkiye News Desk): During a United Nations Security Council session, Turkey welcomed progress in efforts to eliminate the remaining elements of Syria’s chemical weapons programme and called for strengthened international cooperation in this regard.

Turkey’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ahmet Yıldız said in his address that the issue of chemical weapons in Syria remains one of the most serious and unfortunate legacies of the former Assad government.

He noted that recent developments have created an atmosphere of hope, as the Syrian authorities are reportedly cooperating closely with international institutions and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

According to the Turkish envoy, Syrian officials and international bodies are jointly working to identify remaining materials linked to the former government’s secret chemical weapons programme, including undisclosed weapons, chemical agents, equipment, and related documents.

He said this progress marks an important step toward the complete elimination of chemical weapons in Syria, although the Syrian people have suffered greatly during years of conflict.

Ahmet Yıldız emphasized that resolving this issue is a complex and technical process, as long-term concealment and disruptions have created significant gaps that make verification difficult.

He stressed that sustainable progress is only possible through a phased, practical, and coordinated international effort, while taking ground realities into account.
