Trump to Attend NATO Summit in Ankara: US Secretary of State

Istanbul (Turkiye Khabar): US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that US President Donald Trump will attend the NATO summit of member states scheduled to be held in Ankara in July.

Addressing the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, he said the upcoming summit could be one of the most important in the alliance’s history, as several key issues need to be clarified and addressed.

According to Marco Rubio, the United States remains a part of the NATO alliance and will continue to participate in the summit; however, he stressed that significant reforms within the organization are necessary and will be discussed in July.

He said that Western European countries have, for decades, reduced defense spending and relied more on their social welfare systems, while the United States has taken on major global security responsibilities.

He added that although the US has substantial resources, they are not unlimited, and therefore other allied nations must also increase their contribution to defense spending.

Rubio also expressed concern that during recent conflicts, some allied countries did not allow the United States access to their military bases, creating difficulties in joint operations.

He said that when the US needed support in times of crisis, some countries did not cooperate, highlighting divisions within the alliance.

Referring to former US President Donald Trump’s interest in Greenland, he said discussions with Denmark and Greenland regarding defense cooperation are ongoing.

According to him, full control over certain regions could make defense systems more efficient and easier to manage.
