Petrol Levy of Rs117 Per Litre Is Economic Murder of the Poor: Hafiz Naeem

Islamabad (Turkiye Khabar) Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has termed the petroleum levy a burden on the public, saying the government is collecting up to Rs117 per litre on petrol, pushing citizens under severe economic pressure.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said the government is imposing heavy taxes even on poor and zakat-eligible individuals, while it has become increasingly difficult for low-income families to meet monthly expenses.

He stated that money is being extracted from the public through petroleum levy in a painful manner and that the policy has become unbearable for the poor segment of society.

According to the Jamaat-e-Islami chief, more than Rs1,200 billion has already been collected in petroleum levy during the first nine months of the current fiscal year, while the amount may rise to Rs1,700 billion by June 30.

Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman added that Jamaat-e-Islami has challenged the petroleum levy in the constitutional court and urged the judiciary to take notice of what he described as a levy exceeding constitutional limits.
