Pakistan Expresses Concern Over India-Canada Uranium Supply Agreement

Islamabad (Turkey News): Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi has expressed concern over the uranium supply agreement between India and Canada, calling it an “unconventional exception” in civil nuclear cooperation.

Andrabi noted that India’s 1974 nuclear test led to the establishment of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, and that all of India’s civil nuclear facilities are not under IAEA supervision. Several Indian installations remain outside international inspection, raising concerns that external uranium supply could contribute to India’s nuclear weapons stockpile.

The spokesperson warned that the agreement could affect the strategic balance in South Asia. Pakistan emphasized the importance of a non-discriminatory, principle-based civil nuclear cooperation framework, stating that selective exceptions undermine the credibility of the global non-proliferation regime.
