New Weight-Loss Pill Shakes U.S. Food Industry

Washington (Health Desk): Following the approval of a new weight-loss medication in the United States, a period of noticeable change has begun within the food industry. Experts say pills belonging to the GLP-1 group are rapidly gaining popularity compared to injections due to their lower cost and ease of use, and a significant rise in the number of users is expected.

According to a report by an international news agency, the availability of appetite-suppressing GLP-1 pills in the U.S. from January could force food manufacturing companies to review their products and strategies, as more people are now preferring pill-based medication for weight loss.

After the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill, shares of several food companies saw a decline. Experts add that approval of a competing drug by Eli Lilly is also expected next year.

Research reports indicate that people using GLP-1 medications tend to spend less on salty snacks, bakery items, soft drinks, and alcohol, while showing greater interest in protein- and fiber-rich foods—an emerging shift that is reshaping food market trends.
