Islamabad (Turkiye News) Khawaja Muhammad Asif has delivered a firm and unequivocal message to the Afghan Taliban leadership, particularly the Haqqani Network, urging them to refrain from sheltering elements hostile to Pakistan and to ensure that Afghan soil is not used against Pakistan.
The Defence Minister stated that during the war against the Soviet Union, Pakistan supported the Afghan Mujahideen, provided them refuge, and hosted their families for decades. He noted that even today, millions of Afghan nationals reside in Pakistan and continue to receive various facilities.
He remarked that members of the Haqqani family had also lived in Pakistan for years as guests. However, in return, support was allegedly extended to elements responsible for bloodshed inside Pakistan. According to the minister, it was clearly conveyed during a meeting in Kabul that no assistance should be provided to anti-Pakistan forces, nor should any form of cooperation be extended to them.
Khawaja Asif further stated that had there been credible assurances of cooperation, discussions could have progressed on financial assistance and other matters. However, an atmosphere of trust could not be established. He emphasized that the Haqqani name is associated with a respected religious lineage and that this association should be honored by playing a constructive role in ensuring peace and stability in the region.
