Azerbaijan (Commerce Desk): Azerbaijan is enhancing its strategic position in energy and digital connectivity and is emerging as a key hub for cybersecurity, according to Carmen Elena Serno, Scientific Director at Romania’s National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics (ICI Bucharest).
Serno made the remarks during the inauguration of the Information Security Testing Laboratory at SOCAR’s Baku Higher Oil School. She highlighted that Azerbaijan’s growing role in the region is making cybersecurity increasingly important: “Azerbaijan is not only an energy-producing country but is also becoming a center for energy and communications in the region. As systems become more complex and interconnected, their protection gains strategic significance.”
She emphasized that the digitalization of critical infrastructures such as energy, transport, and communications brings new opportunities, but also generates additional risks: “Cybersecurity is not just a technical issue; it is a matter of national security and economic stability. Practical training and simulation environments are particularly important.”
Serno further noted that modern laboratories in universities and international collaboration projects will accelerate professional training in the country and strengthen Azerbaijan’s position as a regional hub in the field of cybersecurity.
