Azerbaijan and Belgium Agree on Renewable Energy Cooperation

Baku: A meeting was held between Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov and a delegation led by former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, where both sides discussed the implementation of renewable energy projects and prospects for exporting energy.

According to Azerbaijan’s state news agency AzerTAc, representatives of the Belgian company W-Kracht also attended the meeting. The company specializes in developing onshore wind power projects in Belgium. During the talks, participants reviewed opportunities to implement renewable energy projects in Azerbaijan and export the generated energy to foreign markets.

The meeting highlighted that Azerbaijan is playing an important role in promoting stability and constructive cooperation in the region. In this context, the country’s energy policy—particularly the development of renewable energy sources and the establishment of energy corridors—has attracted the attention of international partners.

Officials noted that work is currently underway on 11 wind and solar power plant projects in Azerbaijan. At the same time, a comprehensive study of the national electricity grid is being conducted to evaluate the possibility of integrating new power generation capacity into the system.

Participants were also informed that plans to establish data centers are under consideration, which could increase electricity demand in the future. Meanwhile, infrastructure projects aimed at exporting electricity to Europe are also in progress. In this regard, Azerbaijan plans to establish an electricity connection with Eastern Europe starting in 2032.

On the occasion, Azerbaijan expressed its desire for European companies to invest in energy production projects in the country and later sell the generated electricity in Eastern European markets.

At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue negotiations on expanding cooperation in the renewable energy sector.
