Istanbul (Turkiye Khabar) Romisa Ozturk, a Turkish student from Istanbul, has returned home after completing her PhD, following her earlier detention by US immigration authorities.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Ozturk successfully completed her doctoral program in Child Study and Human Development. She was detained in the US state of Massachusetts after expressing her opinion as a co-author of a pro-Palestine article in an academic journal.
Reports state that the incident took place in March 2025 when officers of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained her near Tufts University in Somerville, Massachusetts.
Later, the matter was resolved through a legal settlement in a federal court between the parties, after which she was released and immigration proceedings were terminated.
According to the ACLU statement, Romisa Ozturk said that she has completed her education after years of hard work and will now continue her research work in her home country.
She also stated that the experience she went through during detention is important not only for her but also for the children and young people she has been advocating for.
