Taliban seize and burn musical instruments in Nangarhar

Nangarhar (Monitoring Desk) – In Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, the Taliban confiscated and burned musical instruments during an operation against what they described as immoral activities. According to a statement from the Governor’s Office, the action was carried out by officials from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

The statement said that 86 musical instruments were seized in Jalalabad and destroyed in the presence of a joint committee. Taliban authorities claimed that music and related activities could mislead the youth and society, making such measures necessary.

Meanwhile, in the northeastern province of Takhar, the Taliban detained at least 25 individuals at a private event for playing music, stating that the arrests were due to violations of religious principles.

Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have imposed strict restrictions on music across Afghanistan, including on radio, television, social gatherings, weddings, and educational institutions. Many singers, musicians, and instrumentalists have left the country and relocated abroad.
