Switzerland Nightclub Explosion Kills 47

Geneva (Monitoring Desk): At least 47 people have died and over 100 were injured in an explosion and fire at a nightclub in Crans-Montana, a popular Swiss ski resort, during New Year’s celebrations. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the incident and conveyed solidarity with the Swiss government and people.

The nightclub was hosting a New Year’s event when the incident occurred. Videos show staff carrying burning champagne bottles that struck the low wooden ceiling. Around 1:30 a.m., the fire erupted, quickly engulfing the basement. Panic ensued as attendees attempted to escape through a single staircase. Authorities report 115 people were injured, many critically.

Initial investigations indicate the incident was an accident, not a result of terrorism or criminal activity. Italian authorities stated that 16 Italian nationals are missing, with 15 hospitalized, while the French Foreign Ministry reported at least 8 French citizens missing. Among the injured is 19-year-old French footballer Taheris Dos Santos of FC Metz, who is receiving treatment in Germany.

Identification of the deceased is challenging due to severe burns; DNA and dental records are being used. Severely injured victims were transferred to hospitals in neighboring countries. Swiss President Guy Parmelin called the incident one of the worst disasters in the country, noting that most victims were young people celebrating the New Year. British King Charles also described it as a heart-wrenching tragedy. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed Pakistan’s support for the Swiss people during this difficult time.
