Islamabad (Pakistan News): Mahmood Khan Achakzai, leader of the opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Aaeen Pakistan, has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
Speaker of the National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, issued the notification of his appointment, officially making Mahmood Khan Achakzai the opposition leader. According to the notification, the appointment will take effect from January 16, 2026, under the National Assembly’s business rules.
The position of opposition leader had been vacant since the disqualification of Umar Ayub Khan in the May 9 case. Mahmood Khan Achakzai, head of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and leader of the opposition alliance, was nominated by PTI founder Imran Khan for the role.
Earlier, the National Assembly session began under the chairmanship of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. On this occasion, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry noted that the two-day break in the session had led to lower attendance, suggesting that the question hour be postponed. However, Speaker Sadiq stated that there would be no question hour today and it would not be deferred in view of members’ efforts.
Later, Barrister Gohar mentioned receiving information regarding $8,000 from a PTCL meeting and noted that the notification was expected to be issued on Thursday. The Speaker replied that he would forward the matter to the business committees before returning to the chamber to issue the notification.
