Ceremony held in Turkmenistan marking 900th anniversary of great architect Ajami Nakhchivani

Baku (Turkey News) As part of Azerbaijani Cultural Days in Turkmenistan, a special ceremony was held to mark the 900th anniversary of the great Azerbaijani architect and founder of the Nakhchivani style of architecture, Ajami Abu Bakr oghlu Nakhchivani.

According to the Azerbaijani state news agency, the event took place at the Turkmen State University of Architecture and Construction, where senior university officials, professors, students, and other guests attended.

The ceremony was hosted by Professor Karim Tahirov, Director of the Azerbaijan National Library, who described Ajami Nakhchivani as a prominent architect of medieval Azerbaijani architecture, credited with introducing refinement and innovation in the architectural style of his era.

He said that under a special decree of President Ilham Aliyev, the 900th anniversary of Ajami Nakhchivani is being commemorated at the state level, and the anniversary has also been included in UNESCO’s 2024–2025 commemorative program.

Later, Professor Rahiba Aliyeva from the Institute of Architecture and Art of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences delivered a lecture on “Ajami Nakhchivani and Classical Azerbaijani Architecture.”

Speakers highlighted that the works of Ajami Nakhchivani represent the cultural and intellectual development of 12th-century Azerbaijan. His architectural masterpieces, including the Momine Khatun Mausoleum and the tomb of Yusuf ibn Kuseyir, are considered masterpieces of Islamic and Turkic architecture.

Experts noted that the architectural school founded by Ajami Nakhchivani had a profound influence not only in Azerbaijan but also on architectural traditions across the Middle East.
