Istanbul (Turkey News Desk): Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ünal Üstel has expressed strong reservations over the military cooperation agreement between France and the Greek Cypriot administration.
In a written statement issued by the Prime Minister, it was said that the “Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA)” signed between the defence ministers of both sides could pose a threat to the security balance in the region.
He stated that France has no historical, geographical, or political ties with Cyprus, yet it is attempting to expand its military presence in the region, which could disturb the delicate balance in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Ünal Üstel described the agreement as a “highly wrong move,” saying that it ignores the position of the Turkish Cypriot side.
He further added that attempts to alter the balance in the Eastern Mediterranean will not succeed, and that no move affecting the legitimate rights and interests of Türkiye and the Turkish Cypriot people will be accepted.
