Labour Day being observed today in Pakistan and across the world

Lahore (Turkey News) Labour Day is being observed today in Pakistan and around the world to highlight the sacrifices of workers and promote their rights; however, a large number of labourers are still seen striving for employment even on this day.

The history of Labour Day dates back to 1886, when workers in Chicago, United States, protested for better working hours and rights. Police firing during the protests resulted in the deaths and injuries of several workers, while many activists were also punished.

In remembrance of this event, May 1 is observed every year worldwide, reaffirming the commitment to protect workers’ rights.

In Pakistan, Labour Day began to be officially observed in 1973, and since then seminars, rallies, and various events are held across the country each year.

According to labour leaders, millions of workers in the country are still deprived of basic facilities, and those working in the private sector often lack access to healthcare, social security, and other rights.

They emphasized the need to ensure implementation of the minimum wage and to increase workers’ representation in legislation so that their issues can be effectively addressed.
