Istanbul (Turkiye News) The U.S. Ambassador to Turkey has described the long-standing dispute with Ankara over the F-35 fighter jet program as unnecessary and illogical, and emphasized the need for its swift resolution.
According to international media reports, the ambassador said that both Turkey and the United States are key NATO allies, and resolving this dispute would further strengthen the alliance.
He stated that disagreements arising from Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system had affected bilateral relations, but the issue could be resolved through diplomatic means within a few months.
The ambassador noted that any solution would require confirmation that the relevant system is not in operational use, in order to ensure the protection of sensitive military technology.
He added that any potential agreement would strictly comply with U.S. defense laws and security standards, and no compromise would be made in this regard.
According to the ambassador, progress in this matter could reopen the possibility of Turkey rejoining the F-35 program, enhance NATO cooperation, and further strengthen defense and economic ties between the two countries.
He said such developments would not only be significant for U.S.–Turkey relations but would also contribute to the balance of power in the region and strengthen NATO’s overall capabilities.
